How to Resolve a Signature Mismatch with the RTA

Why mismatches occur and the usual way to update a specimen signature with the Registrar and Transfer Agent.

Why mismatches occur

  • Signatures naturally change over time.
  • Name changes after marriage.
  • The original specimen is faint or incomplete.
  • A joint holder has died.

The usual fix

  1. Obtain the RTA's current KYC and signature forms (the ISR series).
  2. Give a fresh specimen signature on the form.
  3. Have your bank confirm the signature, where the RTA asks for that.
  4. Submit identity and PAN documents as instructed.
  5. Obtain written confirmation that the record has been updated.

When a joint holder has died

If the mismatch is with a deceased joint holder's signature, the correct route is transmission, not signature update.

Frequently asked questions

Is a signature mismatch the same as a name mismatch?
