Where NRIs usually get stuck
- Documents needing attestation or notarisation abroad
- Death certificates issued outside India
- Choosing the right demat and bank account
- Couriering originals
Overseas death certificates
SEBI's July 2026 framework lists the accepted ways of certifying a death certificate issued abroad: certification by a court magistrate, judge or notary in the country of issue; consularisation by an Indian Embassy or Consulate; apostille; or certification by authorised officials of certain bank branches. An English translation is required if the document is in another language.
Accounts
Recovered shares are credited to a demat account, and money to a bank account, in the claimant's name. NRIs should choose account types that suit the applicable foreign-exchange rules and take professional advice on tax and FEMA.
