How to Dematerialise Physical Share Certificates

A step-by-step guide to dematerialising paper certificates through a depository participant.

Before you apply

  • Ensure your demat account names and their order match the certificates.
  • Check that your KYC is complete with the DP.
  • Look at signature and address differences between certificates and current records.

The process

  1. Ask your DP for the demat request form and fill it in.
  2. Submit the original certificates with the form, marked as the DP instructs.
  3. The DP forwards the request and certificates to the company's RTA.
  4. The RTA verifies the certificates and confirms to the depository.
  5. Shares appear in your demat account.

Typical objections

  • Signature mismatch
  • Name or folio differences
  • Torn or damaged certificates
  • Joint names not matching the demat account
